Little Things: Day 7

What a week! Thanks so much to everyone who has played along and answered the questions. It's been so much fun reading all the comments! Over the next few days, winners of the second half of the week will be announced, so keep your eyes peeled...you might be a winner!

Today has two LITTLE THINGS: scallop scissors and dimensionals. I know, I know. Scallop scissors are so old school, so boring, so out of style. But when you use them to round the corners of a raised panel and/or the card base, you get a very subtle yet oh-so-nice rounded edge that can make a huge difference on CAS cards.

By using little snips of SU dimensionals (the best I've ever used) to pop individual flowers and by using the scissors to snip the corners, this very CAS card is so much more finished-looking!

And yes, I did use Smooch in the centers of the flowers for a little flat bling. The branch and flowers are from PTI's Out on a Limb set, and the sentiment is from a limited edition Thank You set from Clear and Simple Stamps.

Today's give-away will go to two lucky winners. Each will get a pair of Fiskars scallop scissors and a package of SU dimensionals. Please note that I have ordered the dimensionals and will not mail these prizes out until my order comes in. To enter this drawing, please leave a comment on this blog post. Email entries will not be included in the drawing.

Scallop Scissors and Dimensionals Give-Away Question
Share a fun LITTLE THING that resides on a shelf in your home. It can be anything...a book, knick-knack, photo, game, CD, candle, food, towel, trophy, iPod dock, whatever. As I'm typing this, I noticed the Inukshuk that George and I brought home from our 20th anniversary trip to British Columbia. It's such a cute statue...even has a belly button!

  3. On a shelf in the guest bath is tiny teapot given to me by a friend years ago. It always makes me smile & think of her when I see it, especially since we now live in different states.

  4. I don't know if this counts, but we keep a sticky note on our fridge from our mail carrier that says "I love your porch!" Makes me smile every time I see it.

  5. We had a chess tournament at our house for just the 4 of us in our family. My son ran it and my daugher made medals for everyone. I have my 2nd place medal proudly pinned to the wall near my craft area.

  6. It's a book. I wanted to make a cookbook of our favorite family recipes and got my family involved in creating it. We paired each recipe with a family picture that followed it's theme. For Homemade Ice Cream, we used the picture of my son cranking the handle of the ice cream maker. The meat dishes had the kids showing cattle or hogs from 4-H. My daughter designed the pages using Photoshop. We gave many copies away for Christmas gifts about 3 years ago.

  10. Have loved your "Little Things" questions and really have enjoyed reading the answers all week. My Little Thing is just one of many favorites on our shelves, but here's what it is. A black bowl with white speckles that is filled with beautiful eggs. Many, many years ago I sang a duet with a gentleman from our Church at the funeral of another member's husband. The widow generously made this bowl of eggs as payment for singing from real, blown-out eggs, covered with gorgeous Japanese Washi paper. They have a shiny coat of something on top of the paper to preserve them. I used to put them out only at Easter but since moving to Illinois 9 years ago, they have a permanent place on a shelf in our hutch. You can see samples of the paper, here: http://www.paperstudio.com/catalog2.php?category=%20Chiyogami%2C%20Yuzen%2C%20Washi%20Japanese%20Paper

  11. I have a framed photo of DH and I from our hotel window in Florence Italy. Always makes me smile when I remember that trip.

  12. Everything is changing regularly on the shelves but there is a doll, a toy cart, printed and assembled by my son who is always there maybe because it is very funny. Depending on how you look it seems that the volume of the head changes from flat to three dimensional. It is a strange thing, but a lot of attention. As that beautiful card today. Overlapping flowers make it special.

  13. I like rocks - round, "soft", pretty rocks. They need to fit in your hand smoothly. And they need to have a special visual attraction also. My son went to college at Oswego, so for one Mother's Day he came home with several "special" rocks. These are on my shelf displayed very proudly and are very cherished.

  14. my favorite "little thing"is a shepherd boy from my dad's nativity set when he was a little boy - it's about 3" tall - very worn - about 100 yrs. old.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love your card, you make it look so easy to to CAS cards. My favorite little thing is a duck paper towel holder that my now 30 year old son gave to me when he was in 2nd grade. They had a Christmas store one year where they could go and by things for a few dollars.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have the ceramic snake my son made in school - because it was the only kind of snake every allowed in my house - sitting on a shelf over my sink.

  17. That is such a pretty card, clean and fresh, and uncluttered. I love it,

  18. One of my favorite little things on my shelf is a small, gorgeous, very detailed windmill sculpture that we brought back from The Netherlands. We honeymooned there almost 10 years ago. Needless to say it was a very special time, and a great memory!

  19. I have a tiny little race car with pins holding on button wheels that my grandpa whittled for me many years ago.

Thanks for such a nice week.

I love my "unfashionable" scissors! Lol. I would appreciate you doing a video or picture tutorial of how you cut your corners with scallop scissors. I am apparently a little slow (ha ha) and tried this and ended up with wonky looking corners. Are there different sizes of scallop scissors? Would that make a difference?

My "little thing" on a shelf is a cute little metal (iron? not sure) Herbie Husker statue that I picked up years ago and love! He is the mascot for the University of Nebraska and he makes me smile! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, I love the dimension you added to this card! It really makes it pop!Beautiful branch!Do you remember how Avon bubble bath used to come in cute little character containers? The head would screw off so you could pour some out? I have a Siamese cat bottle that belonged to my great aunt. She also had two Siamese cats that roamed around her house when we visited. She is gone now, but this cat on my shelf reminds me of her. :)

  22. This is so pretty and it looks like Washington DC at cherry blossom time, if a simple card can evoke that kind of emotion you know you have a winner. :) On the shelf, i had to think if I had a shelf anywhere, well, I kind of sort of do and I have three home made tiles from Mexico hanging vertically on a wrought iron hanger holder thingey in the Dining room. Makes me think of sunshine all dreary winter long.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Like your pretty branch card-looks so springy!

On my computer tower sits a little computer angel. I used to collect angels and this one fits right in.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have a little ceramic teapot that an Aunt gave me over 30 years ago. They lived in California and had traveled cross country in a motor home and stopped by our house in South Georgia. She gave me the teapot and I have since kept it out on a shelf at the various places we have lived. She is 94 and still pretty strong willed and sassy ...

  25. Beautiful card, Susan!! You are right the little
touches like popping up the flowers and the
rounded corners, really do add so much to your
card. One little thing on my shelf that has a
big meaning for me is a picture of my father.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have this little cow figurine that my mom had painted to look like my first 4-H dairy project. Her name was Candy and I loved her (like a pet).

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have a little ceramic elephant. It's really kind of butt-ugly, more realistic than cute; but I remember it on my grandma's knick-knack shelf for as far back as I can remember. Just knowing that it's been around for longer than me and survived living on the farm with 9 kids and uncounted grandkids managing not to knock it down & break it makes me smile.

PS - if I'm the random winner here, please bless someone else with the prize. I already have more Fiskars decorative scissors than any sane person would admit to, as well as a stash of the SU dimensionals (you're right - they are better than any others out there).

    ReplyDelete
  28. I mostly decorate the shelf with hand made cards but I have a pair of crystal feng shui tortoise which was a wedding gift from one of my dear friends that gives me immense pleasure.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i have a single red rose that my oldest son gave me for my birthday one year. he's now moved out and married to a wonderful woman. he now brings her flowers (as it should be!).

    love the card!

  30. beautiful card! one of my favorite little things is a small navajo wedding vase that was given to me shortly after i got married.

  31. Such a spring-y card - like Cherry blossoms. I love my 4 inch crystal bud vase. It is a gift from two former supervisors when they hired me. I had been a temporary employee greeting all the other candidates as they came in to interview and waited weeks for a decision to be made. We are all retired now and still keep in touch.

  32. Love your card. I have a little dutch windmill salt shaker from my grandmother that is my favorite thing.

  37. Beautiful card. I've always wanted that On a Limb PTI set, but never got it because I have the Just Vine SU set that is so similar. But everytime I see a Limb card it gets me! And yes, I DO think the SU dimensionals are the best! They don't pop as high, and are just more subtle than others I've used. As for the "thing," mine is a 3" high crystal figure of a mom holding a little baby. I've had it forever, and it signifies my kids, and my grands, and it's a cheap little thing I'll never part with!

  38. We have a beautiful New Zealand koru that some friends gave us as a parting gift from NZ, that unfortunately broke on our travels, but still holds a special place on our shelf and our thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am wondering if you ever use a corner rounder. I bought this little cheap gizmo and it makes the most wonderful rounded corners -- and they are even unlike the ones I do with scissors.
A favorite little thing is a cat shaped ring holder from Mexico -- the tail sticks up in the air and that's where you slip your rings. Its bright colors remind me of taking winter vacations to get warm!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have a little Reptar figure that sits on my desk by my computer. He makes noise and flashes fire when you roll him. My kids and I were so into "Rugrats" for so many years :) We especially love the "Reptar on Ice" episode. Now that the kids are 20 and 23, it reminds me of gentler, easier times. I love today's card and would like to see pics of how you round those corners with scissors. <3

  41. Love the pink card...perfect for Easter or Mother's Day. I have a small ceramic bowl on the mantel that my daughter made in junior high.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What a beautiful card! I couldn't agree more about how great dimensionals are and I also agree that rounding a corner or corners on a CAS card can have a huge impact.

On a shelf in my bedroom, I have a pint sized clear glass jar with a latching lid that is decorated with dimensional stickers. Inside the jar is some irridescent confetti and a typed list of things that my daughter loves about me. It was my mother's day present from 2 years ago that she made a daycare. The daycare provider interviewed all 6 girls and typed out their words to include in each jar. It's a perfect snapshot of her thoughts at 3 years old.

  43. Thank you Susan for a wonderful week of getting to know each other through our 'small things'. I have so many things on my shelves, old and new, a clock that was my great-grands, and I have grands of my own, and this years school photo's of them. I really must unclutter, would it help make my cards more Simplistic? Thanks again...rhea

  45. Lovely, elegant card! A fun thing on our shelf is a frog with a stick through it that we brought back from Egypt. By rubbing the stick over the back of the frog, it makes frog sounds. The grandees love it!

  47. I bought a crystal piece with a Tinkerbell design etched in it. It sits on a mirrored stand that revolves and lights up. Bought it years ago when I was visiting my Mom at a gift shop near her house.

  49. What a beautiful card! And I'm glad to hear you've visited my home province of British Columbia!

I have a sweet china vase about 8" high that I was given as a tiny child - it's shaped like an old hollow tree trunk with two steps going up to a door on the trunk and a small white rabbit standing on the steps about to enter his home in the tree trunk. It always reminds me of being a little girl.

  50. I have a shelf around my kitchen above the cupboards and I collect cobalt and milkglass bottles and vases. I love to look up and see them. I just started my collection so there aren't many but I use them too for flowers. I have a favorite and it is a milk bottle I got recently. It's just perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Lovely card! I love using dimensionals--they just add that little perfect touch!

Someone framed our wedding invitation with beautiful pressed flowers. It's on a shelf and I smile every time I look at it.

  52. Oh dear. I have so many things on my shelves. I have to say my current favorite is something my mom made for me. She has taken up making little animals out of socks. I know, sounds strange but they are soooo cute! She made me a white mouse and he is the cutest thing! It also has to be the softest sock known to man! He's been in residence about a week and each time I pass him, I can not resist reaching out and giving his a little pat.

One is filled with spools of silk thread (my grandma's). The other is filled with spools of machine embriodery thread. Both are very colorful. And there are two little clown dolls with ceramic faces I found at a garage sale for $1 a piece. There is probably some dust on there too. I should have paid more attentin to the house cleaning comments. LOL Its been a fun week.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favorite shelf thing is a cross-stitched piece with bears hugging and it says "Hug often, Love well" on it. My husband taught himself to cross-stitch and made this for me before we were married at a time when we were living a few states apart. I had been cross-stitching for years and made him a few small things throughout our "courtship" so he decided to return the favor.

  60. Love the pop-up dimensions of this delightful card! My favorite little thing on my shelf is a shadow box that I created with all the trinkets of souvenirs from our Paris trip. The little things do not have to be expensive, but it is oh...so priceless :)

  61. Your card is stunning. My most treasured little thing is a framed note from my dear grand daughter saying 'I'll always love you. Shanna'. She thought I was being silly when I framed it but it became even more cherished when only weeks later she passed away. Blessings Bernie

Hard to choose, but I have this tiny little kitty, about 5-6 inches, that sleeps on a shelf. She is darling, covered in fur and looks very realistic.
I have enjoyed the little things week and you have opened my eyes to much around the house that I seem to take for granted and overlook as time goes by - thank you for this little thing that has brightened my week!
